Portland Maine Permaculture Meetup

portland meetup thmPortland Meetup

This Meetup is without a doubt the most valuable single resource for anyone interested in learning more about Permaculture, Localization, Thrivabiity, Energy, and Economic Transition in Maine. Lisa Fernandes, the Meetup's coordinator, says on this site:

" (I) Started this group in 2005 as a positive response to peak oil & climate change. (I) Had been a casual student of permaculture since the early 90's & realized that it provided many practical tools & skills for building resilience and community."

From this modest, thoughtful, and mindful beginning has evolved one of the largest Permaculture Meetup organizations anywhere. This dynamic portal offers, promotes, encourages, and stimulates countless activities, events, workshops and other happenings of note. I would encourage everyone to join this Meetup.

Portland Maine Permaculture: Re-Skilling. Relocalization. Building Resilience

"Start at your nose and work out from there." - Bill Mollision

Feeling overwhelmed by what's going on the world? Paralyzed in the face of climate change, peak oil, economic collapse?

This group is about developing techniques and skills - strongly rooted in permaculture - to create a resilient and truly sustainable human landscape. This group is about moving in a positive and productive direction: resilient communities full of creative abundance.   This group is about starting wherever you are and recognizing that none of us can do this alone.

Wherever you are and whatever you are doing, there is some part of this group that will make sense for your life and your relationship to the landscape where you live and work. Join us.

We cover topics such as (but not limited to) edible landscapes, gardening, farming, renewable energy, green building, local currency, rainwater harvesting, composting, mushrooms, local food, forest gardening, herbalism, "green" living, food preservation, sustainable economic systems, conservation, community-building, relocalization and transition towns ...

Some definitions of Permaculture:

Permaculture (permanent agriculture or permanent culture) is the conscious design and maintenance of productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way.

Practitioners of permaculture envision human societies that know themselves as co-creative participants in natural systems. Permaculture aims to regenerate healthy, productive landscapes and communities by consciously applying ecological principles to the design of human habitats.
